Associate Professor Paul Paddle

Paul Paddle is an ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon with fellowship training in laryngology, specialising in disorders of voice, airway and swallowing. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with Honours at the University of Melbourne in 2003, graduating as the top surgical candidate in his class, before completing specialist training in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2013.
Committed to laryngology throughout his surgical training, Paul was awarded a prestigious fellowship in Laryngology at Harvard University in Boston, where he trained with internationally renowned laryngologists Dr Ramon Franco and Dr Philip Song. During this fellowship he gained advanced expertise in all aspects of laryngology, including the assessment and management of voice, airway and swallowing disorders, office-based procedures, complex laryngeal surgery and innovative diagnostic and surgical techniques.
Paul joined Melbourne Voice Analysis Centre in 2014 and has played a key role in the continued development of the practice’s multidisciplinary laryngology service. Working alongside MVAC’s speech pathologists, he provides comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment and management for people with complex voice, airway and swallowing disorders. His particular clinical interests include occupational and professional voice disorders, subglottic stenosis, chronic cough, inducible laryngeal obstruction, neurological voice disorders and voice-affirming surgery. Since commencing voice-affirming surgery in 2018, he has become an active researcher and invited presenter in this field and is a member of the International Association of TransVoice Surgeons.
In addition to his work at MVAC, Paul leads the multidisciplinary Laryngology Service at Monash Health, where he performs specialised laryngology procedures under both local and general anaesthesia. His expertise includes office-based laser surgery, balloon dilatation, vocal fold injections, botulinum toxin treatment and other advanced laryngology procedures. He also consults through Melbourne ENT Group and holds academic appointments as Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University and Senior Lecturer at Monash University and La Trobe University.
Paul holds a Master of Public Health and a Postgraduate Diploma of Anatomy from the University of Melbourne and is an active clinician-scientist with a strong commitment to evidence-based practice. As Principal Investigator on multiple clinical trials in laryngology and ENT, he has attracted competitive funding, including two Passe & Williams Foundation grants, and has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. He supervises Honours, Masters and PhD candidates, is a regular invited speaker at national and international meetings,is Co-Convenor of the Melbourne Laryngeal Surgery Course and contributes extensively to professional education within the laryngology community.
Paul has also served on the Board of the Australian Voice Association and is an active member of the Laryngology Society of Australasia and the International Association of TransVoice Surgeons. His research continues to inform advances in the assessment and management of voice, airway and swallowing disorders.
Outside medicine, Paul is an accomplished musician, holding Associate Diplomas of Music (AMusA) in both Piano and Viola. His own musical background provides additional insight into the assessment and management of professional voice users, complementing his extensive experience in medical and surgical laryngology.
